This blog is a place to share research, experiences and inspirations around teaching and the world of Early Childhood Education —which I believe includes just about anything and everything creative.

Art + Internet

artcyclopedia

We have compiled a comprehensive index of every artist represented at hundreds of museum sites, image archives, and other online resources. We have started out by covering the biggest and best sites around, and have links for most well-known artists to keep you surfing for hours. Update January/2006: We have now indexed over 2,300 art sites, and offer over 95,000 links to an estimated 180,000 artworks by 8,200 renowned artists.”

World Changing

As teachers (and/or parents) of young children, it is important that we stay aware of what is going on in the world, specifically in the area of environmental sustainability and education. We have a responsibility to educate ourselves and set a good example for the children in our care and to continue to educate them, their families (and/or teachers) and the communities we live in.

The book World Changing, A User’s Guide For The 21st Century and it’s website worldchanging.com are just two examples of tools that are making it easy for us to gain knowledge on environmental issues and insight into sustainable practices, on a global level.

“As you think about what these ideas might mean in your life, we encourage you to treat the information we provide as a set of avenues for exploration. There are a lot of ideas here, and not all of them will work for you: indeed, most of them will work only if you apply your own smarts and adapt them to the circumstances you face.”

Take a look at your program (and/or household) as a whole, and ask the children and their families (and/or teachers) to look with you. What can your team do to change the future?

“The foundations of human development are laid during the child’s early years, and early childhood requires an integrated approach to the child’s care, development and learning.”

Thoughts

“My name is Sophia Pappas, and I teach pre-kindergarten at an inner-city public school in New Jersey. By sharing my classroom and my thoughts, I hope to give you more insight into the benefits of high-quality pre-k and how we can all play a role in creating andimproving these vital programs. And I want to know what you think, too, so please don’t be shy about leaving comments and using this blog as an outlet for ideas, reflection, and debate.”

“Saying Goodbye” is an essential read for those of you preparing your students and their families for the transition to kindergarten.

I have been following Sophia Pappas and her students for a few months now. I really enjoy the way she writes and the empathy she expresses for the young people she spends her days with.

Thank You Ms. Pappas for letting us into your classroom and sharing your reflections with us. Will you be back next year?
